One day I was reading a book about
 cats and came across a reference
 to the use of cork as a scratching  material.  Until that moment,
this had never occurred to
 me nor had I seen a post
 made out of cork.

I thought it was worth exploring,
 so I bought some cork, built a
 post for our cats, and was
surprised by how much
two of the three liked it. 

Softer than cedar
Cork is a spongy material that
 allows cats to sink
their claws  in deep.  Some
 cats might prefer
 it to other materials so I thought
I should make it available.

The center photo shows several months of scratching by our cats.  The tape measure indicates that clawing
 is centered about 10" down from from the top, which is about 14" above the floor.

The base is made of elm, a hardwood that complements the color of the cork. Two bolts go all
 the way through the collar pieces and the cork to clamp and hold the post firmly.  Two screws
secure the dado-cut base pieces to the collar.
